Medical Respite

Medical Respite: Connects. Assesses. Navigates.

Medical Respite is a transformative program designed to bridge a critical gap in healthcare access for individuals experiencing homelessness. Many people are discharged from hospitals or emergency rooms while still too medically fragile to recover safely on the streets or in shelters. Medical Respite provides a safe, supportive environment where individuals can continue healing while also receiving the social services necessary to stabilize their physical and mental health conditions. This approach not only improves health outcomes but also reduces unnecessary hospital readmissions and supports long‑term stability.

Upon discharge, program staff contact eligible residents to assess their immediate medical needs, housing situation, and overall level of support required. This assessment guides the development of a personalized care plan that may include wound care, medication management, follow‑up appointments, mental health support, and assistance with daily living activities. Equally important, the program helps individuals navigate housing placement, benefits enrollment, and community resources that promote long‑term independence.

The National Association of Health Care for the Homeless Council (NAHCHC) established national standards for Medical Respite programs in 2016, ensuring that services are delivered with dignity, safety, and consistency across the country. These standards emphasize trauma‑informed care, respect for autonomy, and the importance of creating environments that feel supportive rather than institutional.

Medical Respite services are intentionally provided in the least restrictive and most accessible setting possible. Ideally, this means a community‑based residential environment that avoids the feel of a medical institution and keeps residents connected to their communities of origin. By offering a stable place to recover—combined with compassionate case management and housing support—Medical Respite gives individuals the opportunity to heal fully, regain strength, and take meaningful steps toward long‑term stability.

Medical Respite is a partnership with AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana.
